Ashes To Ash, Dirt to… Clay… To Mazda!
With the boundaries and ideas of car designers being pushed further and further, it never ceases to amaze me what will happen next. In a fascinating piece autoblog is reporting:
We were finally able to check out how the clay model of the Mazda Design Challenge winner was coming, and after two days of milling and scraping, Mallory McMorrow’s design was beginning to materialize. Her vision of the 2018 Mazda3 began to look like an obvious choice considering how Mallory incorporated many of the “Flow” design elements that Mazda has debuted in concept form over the course of the last year, particularly the sweeping lines flanking the sides, the gaping grille and the tapered ducktail rear end.
Fiat’s “Design the Italian Way” competition
Here something from CarDesignNews that well worth a look:
Winners of Fiat’s “Design the Italian Way” competition were announced on September 20, 2007 at the new Fiat Group Automobiles’ Style Centre headquarters, Officina 83, in Turin, Italy. Participants in this competition – launched on November 30, 2006 – came from eight of the world’s leading design schools: Turin’s European Institute of Design, the Design Faculty of Milan Polytechnic, Detroit College for Creative Studies, Coventry University of Art and Design, Tokyo Communications Arts, Moscow’s Stroganov State University, Ahmedebad National Institute of Design (India) and the Umea University Institute of Design (Sweden).
The idea for this award was a joint effort that involved not only Style Centre designers but also the Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands and their respective Product, Engineering & Design and Human Resources management teams. The basic features to be incorporated in projects developed for each of the three brands were defined by the CEOs of Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, namely, Luca De Meo, Olivier Francois and Antonio Baravalle.

“The Intima previews what’s in store from the next-generation version of Nissan’s Maxima, which was last sold in the UK in 2002. Neat details include barn-style doors to aid access and a huge panoramic glass windscreen that extends back into the roofline.
The Mercedes S-Class-sized luxury car also has two-piece headlamps that span the front wing and bonnet, tiny, ultra-aerodynamic mirrors and twin tail-pipes integrated with the rear bumper. It features a new V6 diesel engine.” Reports AutoExpress

GM’s Flextreme Concept: Frankfurt Motor Show
Popular Mechanics have given us a wonderful look at GM’s Flextreme Concept car.
They report that “Opel Flextreme, one of the best-looking, most dramatic concepts in the entire show. It’s an ultramodern, glass-roof wagon with several new angles on doors and openings—rear side doors open forward, and rear cargo doors open upward. Plus GM’s installed several new ideas on lighting design and—get this—a special cargo area under the load floor packed with a pair of Segway electric scooters.”
