In a fascinating piece autoblog is reporting:

We were finally able to check out how the clay model of the Mazda Design Challenge winner was coming, and after two days of milling and scraping, Mallory McMorrow’s design was beginning to materialize. Her vision of the 2018 Mazda3 began to look like an obvious choice considering how Mallory incorporated many of the “Flow” design elements that Mazda has debuted in concept form over the course of the last year, particularly the sweeping lines flanking the sides, the gaping grille and the tapered ducktail rear end.

Winners of Fiat’s “Design the Italian Way” competition were announced on September 20, 2007 at the new Fiat Group Automobiles’ Style Centre headquarters, Officina 83, in Turin, Italy. Participants in this competition – launched on November 30, 2006 – came from eight of the world’s leading design schools: Turin’s European Institute of Design, the Design Faculty of Milan Polytechnic, Detroit College for Creative Studies, Coventry University of Art and Design, Tokyo Communications Arts, Moscow’s Stroganov State University, Ahmedebad National Institute of Design (India) and the Umea University Institute of Design (Sweden).

The idea for this award was a joint effort that involved not only Style Centre designers but also the Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands and their respective Product, Engineering & Design and Human Resources management teams. The basic features to be incorporated in projects developed for each of the three brands were defined by the CEOs of Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, namely, Luca De Meo, Olivier Francois and Antonio Baravalle.

“FOR Alex Rodriguez, a high school student from the Bronx, the nickname was inevitable: A-Rod. But a better one would have been Hot Rod: this Alex Rodriguez, 17, recently worked with a Nissan designer to create a car.

Mr. Rodriguez, who attends New Design High School on the Lower East Side, took part in a program organized by Nissan with a nonprofit organization, Sweat Equity Enterprises, or SEE, to bring professional auto designers together with teenagers in lagging urban neighborhoods. He worked with other students from the Bronx and Brooklyn: Paul Ayala, Shakirra Torain and Chris Jones known as Stewie.”
