Hybrid History. A 20TH Century Lesson.

early-lohner-porsche.jpgIf you have wondered about the origins of the hybrid engine, then you’ll find this, a fascinating post from Auto Time Machine:

Let’s go back in time and learn a little piece of history about hybrid engines and fuel cells during the 20th century. I bet this stuff is older than your Mercedes S430 radiator hose. Anyway, let’s dig in with the details provided by my source!

THE 20TH CENTURY

1904: Henry Ford starts his assembly-line production of “low-priced, lightweight, gas-powered vehicles” and as a result, the Electric Vehicle Company was unsuccessful in the next few years.

1905: American engineer H. Piper records a copyright for a petrol-electric hybrid car.

1913: Steamers and electrics were about to be phased out with the discovery of the self-starter which provided convenience to drivers to start gas engines. Sales of electric cars went down to 6,000 and the Ford Model T sells nearly 182,000 gasoline vehicles.

1920-1965: The period which the mass-production of electric and hybrid cars went stationary.

1966: First bill introduced by Congress with a recommendation to use electric vehicles to reduce air pollution.

1970s: The Arab oil embargo of 1973 brings increased gasoline prices and a new interest in electric and hybrid vehicles.

Car Thieves… Slowed By Remote Control.

car_photo_.jpgCar thieves are a major scourge in the modern motoring world… so when I hear of anything, that sees the low-life robber getting a come-uppance, I take great relish! New anti-theft system outfitted to GM vehicles could stop thieves dead in their tracks – via remote control, reports AutoExpress:

Crooks beware – the next car you steal could be radio controlled. General Motors has developed a new anti-theft system that can be operated remotely by police to slow down a stolen vehicle.

The device is a development of GM’s OnStar tracking technology. It uses a digital signal to override a vehicle’s engine management system. Officers can then reduce the throttle and bring the car safely to a halt, avoiding a high-speed pursuit. For owners it means their pride and joy is likely to be returned in one piece, while the lack of a chase will reduce the risk of casualties.

Smart Skoda… Adaptive Lighting.

Here’s an interesting bit of info I found on What Car?, showing how much the Skoda range has developed.

Skoda's smart new lighting system

• Adaptive system varies according to speed
• System takes weather into account, too
• To be offered to VW, Audi and Seat

Skoda has developed a new adaptive lighting system that takes into account the speed of the car, how long it has been travelling at that speed, the levels of ambient light and even the weather in deciding what beam pattern to adopt.

Up to around 30mph, the lights give a wider beam pattern to illuminate the nearside of the road while avoiding blinding oncoming traffic.

Worst Invention Ever!

A new car… what a beautiful smell. I love the smell of a fresh, unspoiled car interior, so you can imagine my disguist when a friend turned up to show off his new car with an air-freshener hanging from the mirror. It was one of the pine-tree types and I just thought “come back furry dice, all is forgiven”. It has to be one of my pet-hates. Car fresheners are terrible, as it doesn’t matter how long it’s gone out of the car, the smell still lingers… and as for the stick-on ones, what the heck do they use for glue as you never get all the sticky off the dash. I guess that’s one more I won’t be buying. I’m very curious to know are there any other people out there who feel as I do about car air fresheners?…

Eggs
What to expect in the morning:

It?s a morning not unlike any other. You shower, dress and get ready for work — then you step outside to the horror of all horrors: your baby smattered with eggs from nose to tail.
