Holographic person – The future has been born!

Remember the holographic doctor from Star Trek Voyager? Many futuristic technologies from S.T. and other sci-fiction has become reality… the latest is a life size hologram. It’s an early prototype but the interactive hologram is controlled with gestures, allowing you to adjust what you see by pointing and moving your arm. The potential for this new technology is endless – Holograms could be used as receptionists, presenters, augmented reality objects, virtual meeting and one day visualizing your Facebook friends right in the middle of your living room, real size!

Google – Yahoo… In Bed Together!

Yahoo Inc is in advanced talks to carry Web search advertising from Google Inc as part of a search for potential alternatives to being bought by Microsoft Corp. Yahoo’s (which has rejected Microsoft’s unsolicited offer to buy it as insufficient and has been seeking alternatives to a Microsoft takeover) use of Google search would be for a limited test, one source has said. The two-week test with Web search leader Google would involve Yahoo targeting Google Web search advertisements at 3 percent of the users of Yahoo’s own search services.

Microsoft fired back saying that a deal between Yahoo and Google would make the market for Web search less competitive — turning the tables on Google, which has charged Microsoft with anti-competitive practices in the past.

Strip Down!… Honour Web Design and Designers

naked-day-08.png“WordPress Naked Day” is coming up on April 9th, 2008. This is the third year of the annual CSS Naked Day which honours web design and designers around the world who help make our websites and blogs look “pretty” to the eye while still being totally functional under the hood. Dustin Diaz wanted to give the web world an opportunity to remind everyone of the benefits of CSS web page design. By removing the stylesheet for the day, the world would see naked web pages, giving a little more appreciation for the skills of web page designers.

It’s something I might consider doing, but considering all the problems I have had the last week with “weblog breakdown” I’m petrified at the idea of tinkering with my theme and going scriptless… but if it’s a tribute to designers I might have to be brave!

You can find out more on how to go naked after the jump:

Sony Vaio TZ11 laptop & T650i mobile… Greener Options

The electronics industry and the environment lobby always seem to be at loggerheads, particularly in light of all the e-waste being spewed out in the name of “advancement”. The Sony Vaio TZ11 laptop, Sony Ericsson T650i mobile phone and Sony Ericsson P1i PDA have come out on top, in a recent survey of greener electronics products. Conducted by Greenpeace, the survey of the main brands of desktop PCs and notebooks, mobile phones, and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), were assessed for their use of hazardous chemicals, energy efficiency, overall product lifecycle (recyclability and upgradeability) and other factors, such as the promotion of environmental friendliness and innovation.

Vista ‘Capable’ Junk PCs… How To Join Lawsuit Against Microsoft!

vista-capable.jpgIt seems there may be justice in the world after all… and if you’re one of the unlucky souls who bought a “Windows Vista Capable” Junk PC thinking it would actually run Vista well, you may have your chance to seek justice . A federal judge has given class-action status to a lawsuit against Microsoft for the misleading marketing scheme.

The legal firm Gordon Tilden Thomas & ll Cordell LLP filed the suit on the grounds that: “the class action lawsuit alleges that Microsoft violated consumer protection and other laws by marketing PCs as ‘Windows Vista Capable’ (supposedly upgradable to Vista when it later launched) despite the fact that consumers could upgrade only to ‘Vista Home Basic’ — a stripped-down operating system lacking the functionality and features that Microsoft advertised as ‘Vista’ and which has been described as “‘the most pointless edition of Windows that Microsoft has ever released.’”

And now the good news… If you think you deserve to be in the suit, the law firm says, fill out this online form, or send and email to classaction {at} gordontilden(.)com.

iPhone Haptic Keyboard Prototype Introduced.

iphone-vertical_keyboard.gif

A couple of University of Glasgow students have built a prototype of a program that brings haptic touchscreen technology to the iPhone. It’s a buggy program, but even if the kinks get worked out a question remains: does anybody need it? Haptic touchscreens, as you probably know, provide tactical feedback when a button is pressed. In this case, the phone vibrates when you hit a button.

Hotmail… Gone off the boil in Ireland!

hotmailfault.jpgIn light of all the government’s blustery promises regarding the internet in Ireland, Irish Hotmail users of the popular online e-mail service were unable to access their accounts today due to a major technical fault.

Japan Launches Internet Satellite

aleqm5g6cexsynkfz1cz7pdzdirsyttlbq.jpgJapan’s space agency (TOKYO(AP)) launched an experimental communications satellite Saturday designed to enable super high-speed data transmission at home and in Southeast Asia.

The domestically developed H-2A rocket carrying the satellite, “Kizuna,” was launched Saturday evening from the southern island of Tanegashima, according to a live Internet broadcast by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, known as JAXA.

The satellite, equipped with two large multi-beam antennas, separated from the rocket and successfully entered its intended orbit 175 miles from Earth, JAXA said in a statement.
