UCD Dublin… Just taking it too fada!

gaeilge-powerpoint.jpgRecently, someone close to me, who is doing an Irish Diploma in UCD came to me quite worried and asking for my help… and not with their Gaeilge either!

It’s a night course once a week and seems to be very popular with everyone doing… up until the other day. It’s exam time and nothing strange there but what is odd is that University College Dublin announced to the unsuspecting diploma students that they would be required to not only do a written exam, but also give a Powerpoint presentation to the class… even though most of the class had never even heard of Powerpoint.

Like everything, Powerpoint is easy enough to use if someone has explained it and you’ve had a good bit of time to get used to using…  but to give someone a week or two of notice and not only expect them to have their gaeilge correct but also expect them to magically acquire computer skills is crazy. Surely Microsoft Powerpoint would have more relevance on a computer diploma! Are UCD trying to turn what is essentially a great course into a very bad experience of Irish?

I mentioned this to a Gaeilgeoir friend of mine and their response was  “we didn’t even have to do THAT for our Degree course . Powerpoint… Ta siad as a meabhair!”.

Windows 7 Beta Download Available Until January 24th 09

screenshot.jpgAvailability of the Windows 7 Beta has been extended until January 24th 2009.  You can download your own copy of the beta here.

  • You’ll need some technical skills, like knowing how to:

    • Burn an ISO file to make an install DVD (A good example of what we mean by “technical”)
    • Install Windows (of course)
    • Backup and restore your PC (There’s a chance of losing files, so it’s a good idea to do a backup of anything you want to save.)
    • Set up a network

It can be glitchy—so don’t use a PC you need every day.

Windows Server 2008 Unleashed Crouching… Tiger, I Suspect It’s Not!

While the video looks interesting, it reeks of that same potential I fear Microsoft never manages to achieve, these days. Nothing about Microsoft seems to excite me anymore… but what are the alternatives, to the overly bloated computer giant, that nowadays, seems only to thrive on special effects (Vista, proving case in point!)?

Google – Yahoo… In Bed Together!

Yahoo Inc is in advanced talks to carry Web search advertising from Google Inc as part of a search for potential alternatives to being bought by Microsoft Corp. Yahoo’s (which has rejected Microsoft’s unsolicited offer to buy it as insufficient and has been seeking alternatives to a Microsoft takeover) use of Google search would be for a limited test, one source has said. The two-week test with Web search leader Google would involve Yahoo targeting Google Web search advertisements at 3 percent of the users of Yahoo’s own search services.

Microsoft fired back saying that a deal between Yahoo and Google would make the market for Web search less competitive — turning the tables on Google, which has charged Microsoft with anti-competitive practices in the past.

Vista ‘Capable’ Junk PCs… How To Join Lawsuit Against Microsoft!

vista-capable.jpgIt seems there may be justice in the world after all… and if you’re one of the unlucky souls who bought a “Windows Vista Capable” Junk PC thinking it would actually run Vista well, you may have your chance to seek justice . A federal judge has given class-action status to a lawsuit against Microsoft for the misleading marketing scheme.

The legal firm Gordon Tilden Thomas & ll Cordell LLP filed the suit on the grounds that: “the class action lawsuit alleges that Microsoft violated consumer protection and other laws by marketing PCs as ‘Windows Vista Capable’ (supposedly upgradable to Vista when it later launched) despite the fact that consumers could upgrade only to ‘Vista Home Basic’ — a stripped-down operating system lacking the functionality and features that Microsoft advertised as ‘Vista’ and which has been described as “‘the most pointless edition of Windows that Microsoft has ever released.’”

And now the good news… If you think you deserve to be in the suit, the law firm says, fill out this online form, or send and email to classaction {at} gordontilden(.)com.
